The 2012 Malta International Arts Festival’s visual art exhibition Wicc imb Wicc – images of the self explores personal portraits of and by contemporary artists. The word ‘portrait’ – as derived from the Latin’s portrayer, meaning ‘to drag out, expose, reveal’. Wicc imb Wicc aims at presenting self representations by ten local and international artists that raise general questions of identity within social, historical and gender-related contexts. How do artist’s represent themselves in relation to their social environment, how do they view themselves intimately, are their gestures and attitudes revealing or concealing their identity, and do the specific techniques or processes employed offer a more complete picture of their being? The unusual freedom offered to the artist by the dual roles of subject and creator allows the viewer a unique opportunity to see the artist represented in their own terms. All artworks have never been shown in Malta with most of the artists creating new works specifically for the exhibition.
